Colombo: India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant retired hurt after being hit by the ball while batting on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka here on Sunday.
Pant was on three runs when he was injured while attempting to pull a delivery from seamer Lahiru Kumara in an effort to hit a four or six. However, he failed to connect properly with the bat and the ball struck him directly on his left hand. Pant was in excruciating pain, prompting the Indian team physiotherapist to rush onto the field and provide him with immediate treatment.
An ice pack was applied to Pant’s left hand before it was strapped. However, the pain did not subside and Pant was forced to retire hurt.
The incident occurred in the 58th over of India’s innings. Pant had faced only 15 balls before he had to return to the pavilion. Ravindra Jadeja was sent in as his replacement and scored 43 runs off 83 balls, including four fours. He narrowly missed out on the 28th half-century of his career.
