Saransh Jain Becomes India’s Oldest Test Debutant, Shubman Gill Surpasses Kapil Dev

Colombo: After taking a 1-0 lead by winning the first Test of the two-match series against Sri Lanka, India began the second Test on Sunday with one player, Saransh Jain, entering India’s unique record books, while before tea another player, Shubman Gill, achieved a milestone by surpassing a legendary Indian.

The 33-year-old off-spinner Saransh Jain began his international career on Sunday. After receiving his Test cap from ‘Bapu’ Ravindra Jadeja, Saransh became the oldest Indian player to make his Test debut in the 21st century.
He is also the oldest Indian Test debutant since 1999. Saransh is 33 years and 145 days old. The last time an Indian player made his Test debut after completing 33 years of age was in 1999, when Robin Singh began his Test career for India during the series against Zimbabwe.

Saransh Jain started playing first-class cricket in 2014. With impressive all-round performances, he helped Madhya Pradesh win several matches in domestic cricket.
He has been included in India’s playing XI in Colombo in place of Kuldeep Yadav.

Saransh Jain is the third Indian player to make his international debut before playing in the IPL.
Before him, Murali Vijay began his Test career by playing against Australia in Nagpur in 2008, before starting his IPL career. Mohammed Shami made his ODI debut in 2013, before playing in the IPL.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has become the fourth-youngest Indian player to complete 3,000 Test runs. In doing so, he surpassed Kapil Dev in the Indian record books:

(1) Sachin Tendulkar: Scored his 3,000th Test run at the age of 23 years and 228 days
(2) Virender Sehwag: Scored his 3,000th Test run at the age of 26 years and 157 days
(3) Dilip Vengsarkar: Scored his 3,000th Test run at the age of 26 years and 263 days
