Meta Begins Massive Layoffs As 8,000 Employees Face Early-Morning Exit Emails

New Delhi : Thousands of employees at Meta woke up to uncertainty on Wednesday as the company officially launched one of the largest rounds of layoffs in its recent history. According to internal memos and multiple media reports, affected workers began receiving termination emails as early as 4 AM local time, with nearly 8,000 jobs expected to be cut worldwide.

The layoffs are part of Meta’s ongoing effort to reshape the company around artificial intelligence, a strategy that CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been aggressively pushing over the past year. While the company continues to post strong profits, leadership believes a leaner structure focused heavily on AI development is necessary to stay ahead in the rapidly changing tech industry.

Employees across North America were reportedly instructed to work from home during the rollout period as the company coordinated layoffs across multiple regions and time zones. The move immediately sparked anxiety inside Meta offices, with many workers spending the days leading up to the announcement backing up files, updating resumes, and preparing for possible job losses.

Reports suggest the restructuring could impact nearly 10 percent of Meta’s global workforce. In addition to the layoffs, the company has also frozen roughly 6,000 open positions that were previously expected to be filled this year. Teams connected to recruiting, middle management, and several non-AI business functions are believed to be among the most vulnerable.

Internally, Meta is said to be moving toward what executives describe as “flatter teams” — smaller, faster-moving groups designed to accelerate AI product development and automation efforts. Some employees who remain with the company may be reassigned into newly created AI-focused divisions as part of the transition.

For many workers, the timing and manner of the layoffs have become a major point of frustration. The overnight emails and sudden communication process created a tense atmosphere across teams, especially among employees who had already witnessed multiple rounds of cuts over the last few years.

The restructuring highlights a growing trend across the tech industry, where companies are increasingly redirecting resources toward artificial intelligence while reducing spending in other areas. As competition intensifies between major players racing to dominate the AI space, firms like Meta are making difficult decisions aimed at prioritizing long-term technological growth over workforce expansion.

While Meta has framed the move as a strategic shift toward efficiency and innovation, the layoffs have once again raised concerns about job stability in the tech sector — even at some of the world’s most profitable companies.
