Gill Goes Berserk, Powers India to Victory with Record-Breaking Double Century

Guwahati: India defeated West Indies in the second ODI here on Wednesday by eight wickets with 39 balls to spare, riding on captain Shubman Gill’s record-breaking unbeaten 223 (133 balls, 26 fours, eight sixes) and an unforgettable 255-run opening partnership with Rohit Sharma (101 off 75 balls, 10 fours, six sixes). Player of the Match Gill completed the second double century of his ODI career. Rohit Sharma holds the world record for most ODI double centuries, with three in total, including his highest score of 264. India clinched the series 2-0.

Gill Sets World Record for Fastest Double Century

Shubman Gill reached 200 in just 117 balls against West Indies in the ODI. It was his second double century and the fastest-ever double century by an ODI batter in world cricket. He broke Ishan Kishan’s record of reaching 200 in 126 balls. Glenn Maxwell had previously completed his double century in 128 balls.

India Secure 14th Consecutive Series Win

India have now won their 14th consecutive ODI series against the Caribbeans. A total of 811 runs scored in a single ODI between the two teams is also a new record. After West Indies posted a massive 405/7, they would hardly have expected India to chase down 406. India reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs. The result also brought back memories of South Africa’s 438/9 after Australia had scored 434/4 in 2006. Ruturaj Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 31.

West Indies’ six bowlers struggled to contain India’s top order. Alzarri Joseph was the most expensive bowler, conceding 89 runs without taking a wicket. Five of their six bowlers conceded more than 50 runs.

Earlier, under the leadership of Shai Hope, West Indies created history by becoming the first-ever Caribbean side to score 400 runs in an ODI. The West Indies, who won the first two ODI World Cups in 1975 and 1979, capitalised on India’s relatively inexperienced pace attack and piled up a huge total. India, however, responded in emphatic fashion.

The Caribbeans made an aggressive start after being put into bat. After losing their first wicket at 37, they produced two major partnerships worth 110 and 182 runs before finishing with a mammoth 405/7 at the end of 50 overs.

India faced a daunting target of 406. However, with batters such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Naman Dhir in the line-up, India had the firepower required to chase down the target.

Opener John Campbell (101 off 68 balls, five sixes, nine fours), captain Shai Hope (104 off 94 balls, three sixes, eight fours) and Amir Jangoo (114 off 77 balls, three sixes, 13 fours) all scored centuries, paving the way for West Indies to cross the 400-run mark for the first time in the 55-year history of the ODI format. Roston Chase (unbeaten 29) and Shamar Joseph (unbeaten 14) also made valuable contributions towards the end.

For India, Gurnoor Brar, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each, while Prasidh Krishna claimed one. Aaqib Nabi, the pace bowler making his international debut in this match, conceded 84 runs without taking a wicket.

Shai Hope’s side also broke their previous highest ODI total of 389. The Caribbean team had earlier posted 389 against England in 2019. Among the major ODI nations, England’s 481/6 against Australia remains the highest team total.
