Beijing: Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev was disqualified from the China Open on Monday after angrily hitting a ball into the stands during his semifinal against another former world No. 1, Novak Djokovic. The ball struck a spectator in the eye, resulting in Medvedev’s removal from the semifinal and giving Djokovic a direct passage into the final.
The Russian, who has won one Grand Slam title, was trailing Djokovic 5-7, 3-5 when the officials took the drastic action against him. The ball Medvedev struck into the stands hit a spectator in the eye, and tournament staff took the injured spectator away for medical treatment.

A similar incident had occurred involving Djokovic in 2022. During the US Open, Djokovic angrily hit a ball that struck a line judge in the throat, leading to his disqualification from the match.
Djokovic remains unbeaten at the China Open. He has played 33 matches at the tournament and boasts a perfect 33-0 win-loss record. He will now face Alex de Minaur in the final. De Minaur also advanced directly to the final after his semifinal opponent, Hubert Hurkacz, withdrew because of an injury.
