Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down as Indian Women’s Team Captain Across All Formats

Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team in all formats, ending a significant chapter in her leadership career.

She announced the decision on social media, describing it as difficult and one that carried years of memories, emotions and sacrifices. “I have given everything I had to this team and to Indian women’s cricket my blood, my sweat, my time, and many times, a part of my own game and personal ambitions,” she wrote. She added that she had often set aside her individual performance and personal growth because she believed the team had to come first.

The announcement followed a Board of Control for Cricket in India review meeting in Guwahati. The meeting, chaired by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, was attended by Harmanpreet, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar. It was held to evaluate the team’s recent performances and discuss the roadmap ahead.

Harmanpreet first took on the captaincy in 2016 after earlier filling the role on a temporary basis. Under her leadership, India achieved major milestones, including the ODI World Cup title and Asian Games gold. In her message she reflected on both the lowest moments of heartbreak and criticism and the highest highs of victories and national pride.

She said every difficult decision she made as captain was intended to strengthen the team and give other players the chance to grow. “I leave the captaincy today with a heart full of emotions, but also with peace. Because I genuinely believe my team is in a good place,” she stated.

Harmanpreet confirmed she will continue her playing career. “Captaincy ends. The journey continues,” she wrote, expressing gratitude to teammates, coaches, support staff, the BCCI, family and fans. The move is expected to open the door for long-time vice-captain Smriti Mandhana to lead the side into a new phase.
