Guwahati: Under the leadership of Shai Hope, the West Indies have created a new piece of history in ODI cricket against India here. The Caribbean side, which won the first two ODI World Cups in 1975 and 1979, have scored 400 runs in an ODI for the first time. The West Indies made the most of India’s weakened pace attack to pile up a massive total.
After being asked to bat, the Caribbean side made an aggressive start. After losing their first wicket at 37, two big partnerships worth 110 and 182 runs helped them post a towering 7/405 at the end of 50 overs. The massive total has put West Indies in a strong position to win the match and level the series 1-1.
India now face a daunting target of 406 runs. However, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Naman Dhir and other Indian batters have the ability to chase down such a target. If India manage to do so, it would bring back memories of South Africa’s unforgettable chase against Australia in 2006, when they scored 438/9 in response to Australia’s 434/4.
Centuries from openers John Campbell (101 off 68 balls, five sixes and nine fours), captain Shai Hope (104 off 94 balls, three sixes and eight fours) and Amir Jangoo (114 off 77 balls, three sixes and 13 fours) paved the way for the Caribbean side to reach 400 for the first time in the 55-year history of the ODI format. Roston Chase (29 not out) and Shamar Joseph (14 not out) also made valuable contributions at the end to take the team past the 400-run mark. For India, Gurnoor Brar, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each, while Prasidh Krishna claimed one. Akeib Nabi, the pace bowler making his international debut in this match, went wicketless after conceding 84 runs.

On Sunday, India’s victory had been made easier by Kuldeep Yadav’s four-wicket haul and big innings from Kohli (139 not out) and Gill (110). West Indies have now hit back with centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo.
Shai Hope’s team also broke their previous highest ODI total of 389 runs. The Caribbean side had scored 389 against England in 2019, which was their previous record total in an ODI. Among the major ODI nations, England’s 481/6 against Australia remains the highest team total.
