Mumbai : In a heartfelt gesture celebrating over three decades of dedicated service. Western Railway commemorated the 34th anniversary of Mumbai iconic ladies special train by distributing roses to passengers traveling on Monday.
The celebration took place in the 5:39 pm Churchgate to Borivali ladies special, where female railway staff warmly greeted commuters with red roses. The initiative was aimed at honouring a service that has played a crucial role in improving daily travel for thousands of women across Mumbai.
A Landmark Initiative for Women’s Safety
The ladies special train was first introduced on May 5,1992, as a response to the growing challenges women faced wile commuting in overcrowded suburban trains. At that time, even reserved compartments were often difficult to access during peak hours.
The dedicated train service provide a safer, more comfortable alternative, marking a significant step toward inclusive public transport. The inaugural service originally ran between churchgate and Borivali and was flagged off by former union minister Ram Naik
Growing Demand Led to Expansion
Due to overwhelming public response the service was extended to virar in 1933, increasing its reach and accesibility. Over the years, the ladies special has become a vital part of Mumbai’s suburban railway system , catering to working women, students, and daily commuters.
