Mumbai: Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai will be suspended for six hours on May 7 as part of scheduled pre-monsoon maintenance. According to a report by The Free Press Journal, the temporary shutdown is necessary to ensure the runway remains in optimal condition ahead of the rainy season.
During this period, both take-offs and landings will be halted, affecting several domestic and international flights. Airlines have already informed passengers about the planned disruption and advised them to check flight schedules in advance to avoid inconvenience. The maintenance activity is conducted annually as a preventive measure to maintain safety standards at the busy airport.
The runway inspection and repair work will include checks for surface wear and tear, removal of rubber deposits, and strengthening of infrastructure that could be impacted by heavy rainfall. Officials have stated that these procedures are critical to ensure safe aircraft operations, particularly during the monsoon months when runways are exposed to challenging weather conditions.

As per the report, airport authorities have coordinated with airlines and other stakeholders to minimise disruption. Flight schedules have been adjusted, with some services rescheduled or cancelled during the closure window. Passengers are being urged to stay updated through airline notifications and airport advisories.
The temporary suspension reflects routine safety protocols followed at major airports to maintain operational efficiency. While it may cause short-term inconvenience to travellers, authorities emphasise that such maintenance is essential for long-term safety and reliability.
The Free Press Journal noted that operations are expected to resume immediately after the maintenance work is completed, restoring normal flight movement at one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.
