Mumbai : Mumbai woke up to heavy rain on Wednesday morning as the monsoon finally arrived in the city. Overnight rainfall caused waterlogging in several areas and disrupted traffic. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and Palghar at 4 am, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, very heavy rain, and strong winds of 40-60 kmph.
The alert was later downgraded to an orange alert at 7 am, with more rain expected in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg. Many parts of Mumbai were flooded after continuous rain through the night. Areas such as King’s Circle in Matunga and Hindu Colony in Dadar saw severe waterlogging, with vehicles moving through flooded roads.

The southwest monsoon reached Mumbai on Tuesday, 13 days later than its normal arrival date of June 10. The IMD said the monsoon had also advanced into more parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Heavy rain also led to the collapse of a retaining wall next to a residential building in Vikhroli West on Tuesday night.
Dadar railway station, one of Mumbai’s busiest transport hubs, was flooded on Wednesday morning. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city received more than 300 mm of rainfall between 8 am Tuesday and 8 am Wednesday. The IMD classifies rainfall above 204.4 mm in 24 hours as “extremely heavy.”
Despite the heavy rain, suburban train services and BEST bus operations continued normally. However, traffic jams were reported on several roads, and the Andheri subway was closed due to flooding. Videos showed people walking through knee-deep water in the area. Among the highest rainfall recordings on Tuesday were Nair Hospital (78.96 mm), NM Joshi Marg-Lower Parel (78.4 mm), and Parel TT (72.63 mm).
In the suburbs, Malad Bus Depot received 61.8 mm of rain, while Mankhurd’s Maharashtranagar recorded 51.2 mm. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi shared a video of the flooded Andheri subway and criticised the BJP-led government. The arrival of the monsoon brought widespread rainfall across Mumbai, causing flooding and traffic disruptions, though public transport services continued to operate without major interruptions.
