UK-Returned Techie Claims Dowry Demands, Threats and Assault by In-Laws in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Police in Medipally have registered a fresh case of dowry harassment and assault against a man from Uppal and his family members following allegations by his wife, a London-returned IT professional. The woman has accused her husband and in-laws of subjecting her to repeated intimidation, physical assault, and demands for additional dowry.

According to Medipally police, this is the second complaint filed by the woman from Rampally. A domestic violence case is already pending against the accused based on her previous complaint. The new case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 85 (dowry harassment), 118 (assault), 79 (insult to the modesty of a woman), 352 (intentional insult), and 351 (criminal intimidation).

The woman, who reconnected with her former school classmate through social media while working abroad, returned to India in late 2024. The couple married in 2025 with the approval of both families. Her complaint states that her family provided 40 tolas of gold and a plot valued at nearly ₹1 crore as dowry during the marriage.

Soon after the wedding, the woman allegedly discovered that her husband’s claims of holding a high-paying job and running successful real estate and finance businesses were untrue. Police sources said she claimed her husband had secretly borrowed more than ₹1 crore from her friends and acquaintances, leaving him deeply in debt. This reportedly triggered frequent arguments, after which the husband and his family began pressing for more dowry from her parents.

In her statement to the police, the woman alleged that her father-in-law threatened to “sell” her to settle the family’s debts. She further claimed that her husband and in-laws accused her of maintaining an extramarital relationship and cast doubts on the paternity of her unborn child. The woman also reported instances where her in-laws allegedly outraged her modesty during heated confrontations at home.

Despite an earlier domestic violence case, the accused reportedly failed to attend counselling sessions. The latest complaint stems from an alleged recent incident in which the woman and her family members were threatened and physically assaulted by her husband and in-laws, resulting in her hospitalisation.

Investigating officer Ch Shankaraiah, circle inspector of Medipally police station, confirmed that a detailed probe has been initiated into the fresh allegations.
