India’s Former Cricketer Takes Aim At Gautam Gambhir: “He Comes Before The Media When India Wins, But…”

New Delhi: India failed to win the final Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Thursday, with the match ending in a draw. As a result, India had to settle for a 1-0 series victory, while the outcome also had an adverse impact on India’s position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. Following this, former India opening batsman Sadagopan Ramesh has expressed his displeasure, particularly with head coach Gautam Gambhir’s approach

Sadagopan Ramesh hails from Tamil Nadu. The 50-year-old represented India in 19 Tests and 24 ODIs. Ramesh believes that Gautam Gambhir comes before the media when the Indian team wins, but avoids facing journalists when India loses.

After India won the first Test of the recent series against Sri Lanka in Galle, Gautam Gambhir had told the media, “Rankings are not important to me at all. The Indian Test team is going through a transition phase, and I am sure everyone sitting in the press box and commentary box is well aware of that.”

However, India failed to win the Colombo Test, particularly after Sri Lanka batter Sonal Dinusha produced fighting innings in both innings and prevented India from completing a 2-0 whitewash. Following this, S. Ramesh has strongly criticised Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir had appeared before the media after India won the first Test of the series in Galle.

In an interview, Ramesh further said, “We all know very well that when India wins, Gambhir comes to the press conference. Otherwise, he sends one player or another from the team or a member of the coaching staff to face the journalists.”

Ramesh also said, “Gambhir believes that ICC rankings are not particularly important to him. But India are currently fifth in the rankings. Can anyone say with certainty that India will definitely reach the final of the current WTC cycle? A few days ago, Gambhir said that the Indian team was not struggling in Test cricket. In reality, the whole world knows that the Indian team is currently going through a difficult phase in Test cricket.”

Since Gautam Gambhir became India’s head coach in 2024, the team has suffered the embarrassment of whitewash defeats against New Zealand and South Africa, while India also lost 1-3 in Australia. However, during Gambhir’s tenure, India drew the Test series against England 2-2 and recently defeated Sri Lanka 1-0.
