New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech this year came with a strong message for India’s young population, with the government announcing a series of big plans around artificial intelligence, education, sports, semiconductors and nuclear energy.
One of the biggest announcements was a plan to provide AI training to one crore young Indians over the next year. With AI rapidly changing the way people work and businesses operate, the government wants more young people to have the skills needed to find opportunities in the technology driven economy.
For students preparing for competitive examinations, Modi also announced free online coaching. The move is aimed at helping youngsters who struggle to afford expensive coaching classes and giving students from less financially secure families a better shot at competitive exams.
Sports also found a prominent place in the Prime Minister’s plans. A nationwide talent search for children between five and 15 years of age was announced to identify promising athletes at an early stage. The programme is expected to cover children across villages, towns and cities, with the larger goal of building a stronger pipeline of sporting talent for India.
The Prime Minister also put the spotlight on India’s semiconductor ambitions. He announced plans for seven to eight new semiconductor plants over the next one to two years, as India looks to strengthen its position in chip manufacturing and reduce its dependence on imports.
Energy security was another major theme of the speech. Modi announced an ambitious target of taking India’s nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047. More nuclear reactors are also planned as the country looks for reliable sources of electricity to support its growing economy.
Beyond these announcements, Modi spoke about expanding manufacturing, supporting MSMEs and startups, strengthening defence production and creating more opportunities through sectors such as technology, space and the green economy.
The Prime Minister linked these plans to his broader vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, when India marks 100 years of Independence.
For millions of young Indians, however, the announcements around AI training, free coaching and sports could prove to be the most closely watched. The real test now will be how quickly these promises are turned into programmes that people can actually access.
The speech, therefore, was not just about long term targets. It was also a pitch to a generation that will play a central role in shaping what India looks like over the next two decades.
