PM Modi Urges Vigilance and Compassion as Severe Heatwave

Delhi: With large parts of India battling intense heatwave conditions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a detailed public advisory, stressing the importance of personal safety measures, community support, and empathy during the challenging weather expected to continue over the next four days.

In a series of posts on X, the Prime Minister highlighted the difficulties caused by the soaring temperatures and encouraged citizens to remain proactive in protecting themselves and others. “Different parts of India are witnessing soaring temperatures and the challenges that come with it. This heat is harsh on all of us and I urge you all to take as many precautions as possible. Please stay hydrated, keep water with you when stepping out. Offer a glass of water to others. In weather like this, such kindness goes a long way,” he said.

Modi outlined key symptoms of heat exhaustion that people should monitor closely, including dizziness, nausea, and extreme fatigue. He advised immediate action if someone appears unwell: “Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea or extreme fatigue. If someone around you feels unusually unwell, weak or develops a headache, it is best to help move them to a cool and shaded place immediately. Ensure they get water, ORS etc. that helps them.” He particularly highlighted the vulnerability of children, the elderly, and outdoor workers, warning that ignoring early signs could rapidly escalate to heatstroke. Timely intervention and care, he noted, can make a significant difference.

The Prime Minister also appealed to people to look after their elderly family members. “Whenever possible, call and check on elderly parents, grandparents and loved ones during this heatwave. Remind them to stay hydrated, avoid stepping out in peak afternoon hours and take rest whenever possible.”

Extending his message of compassion, Modi reminded citizens to support wildlife affected by the extreme conditions. “In this extreme heat, let us also remember the birds and animals around us. A small bowl of water kept outside your home, balconies, terraces, shops or offices can become a lifeline for a thirsty bird. May compassion guide us in these difficult days.”

India has been grappling with unusually high temperatures in recent weeks, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and health authorities to issue repeated alerts for above-normal temperatures across several regions. Heat action plans have been implemented in multiple states, focusing on public education campaigns, distribution of oral rehydration solution (ORS) packets, and the establishment of cooling centres to safeguard vulnerable populations, including outdoor labourers, children, and senior citizens.

Authorities continue to closely monitor the evolving situation as elevated temperatures persist in various parts of the country.
