New Delhi: During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands, India strongly dismissed remarks made by the Dutch Prime Minister regarding press freedom and minority rights in the country, calling the comments a result of a “lack of knowledge.” According to NDTV, Indian officials asserted that India remains a vibrant democracy with strong democratic institutions and a high level of public participation in elections.
Responding to the criticism, Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sibi George highlighted India’s democratic values and diversity. He pointed to the recent elections held in different parts of the country, noting the significant voter turnout as proof of the strength of India’s democratic framework. He emphasized that peaceful transfer of power and active public participation continue to define the Indian political system.
The comments came during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to the Netherlands, where discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and deepening ties between the two nations. PM Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten also discussed expanding collaboration across strategic and economic sectors, with both sides describing the relationship as entering a new phase of partnership.
India reiterated that its strength lies in its democratic traditions, pluralism and cultural diversity, while rejecting external criticism on internal matters. NDTV reported that Indian officials maintained that the country continues to uphold democratic principles and constitutional values.
