Amazon has extended its dedicated air cargo network to Northeast India, launching new routes connecting Kolkata and Guwahati that the company says will dramatically cut delivery times across the region while opening faster market access for local sellers.
The new air links integrate the Northeast more tightly with Amazon’s national logistics spine, enabling deliveries across all seven Northeastern states Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura through a combined air-and-surface transport model.
According to Amazon, the dedicated air capacity could improve delivery speeds in the region by as much as five times, giving customers quicker access to products spanning daily essentials, smartphones, consumer electronics, fashion and beauty.
Abhinav Singh, Vice President Operations for India and Australia at Amazon, said the network currently handles 10 flights a day on a dynamic basis, a number that can surge to 200 daily during peak events like The Great Indian Festival.
The inaugural Amazon Air flight to Guwahati was flagged off from Indira Gandhi International Airport by Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, India’s Minister of Civil Aviation. Noting the region’s infrastructure transformation, the minister said every Northeastern state now has an operational airport, with the total count rising from nine in 2014 to 16 today. He added that the new cargo route could benefit farmers, artisans and entrepreneurs by improving logistics access for horticulture and cargo exports.
The minister also highlighted recent policy moves aimed at accelerating air cargo growth including investments in cargo infrastructure and warehousing announced in Union Budget 2026 and the removal of the value cap on courier exports to boost cross-border e-commerce.
What It Means for Local Businesses
State officials and Amazon both say the improved connectivity could help regional sellers reach customers nationwide far more efficiently. Singh pointed to the company’s long-term commitment to Indian logistics: “Since launching Amazon.in in 2013, we have consistently invested in building one of India’s largest logistics networks to serve customers wherever they live. For customers, this means access to Amazon’s vast selection at five times better speeds than before, while sellers and entrepreneurs in the Northeast can now reach customers across India faster and more reliably.”
Amazon Air launched in India in 2023 and currently operates two narrow-body freighters, moving tens of thousands of packages daily across a network that connects major metros including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Guwahati and Pune.
