Man Arrested After Climbing Eiffel Tower and Hanging US Flag on America’s 250th Independence Anniversary

A man was arrested after climbing Paris’ iconic Eiffel Tower on Saturday (July 4) and hanging a United States flag from the landmark as America marked the 250th anniversary of its independence.
The man was seen scaling the 324-metre (1,063-foot) Eiffel Tower during the afternoon before unfurling the Stars and Stripes between the monument’s second and third levels. Following the incident, authorities evacuated the forecourt along with the tower’s second and third floors as a precaution. The man was later taken into custody, and the flag was removed.
According to police, the individual did not provide any explanation for his actions. The incident occurred on the same day the United States commemorated the 250th anniversary of its independence on July 4.
Often referred to as the “Iron Lady,” the Eiffel Tower is among Paris’ most visited tourist attractions, drawing around seven million visitors every year. Constructed in 1889 for the Paris World Fair, the monument initially faced criticism and controversy before becoming one of France’s most recognisable landmarks and a defining feature of the city’s skyline.
