Ghanaian MPs Embrace Indian Culture During Modi’s Historic Parliament Address

Accra: In a vibrant display of cultural appreciation, several Ghanaian parliamentarians donned traditional Indian attire during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic address to Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday. The gesture, which included outfits like sherwanis and bandhgalas, symbolized the deepening ties between India and Ghana during Modi’s first visit to the African nation in over three decades.

The warm reception began as Modi arrived in Accra, greeted by enthusiastic chants of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” from the local community. During his speech, Modi highlighted India’s democratic values and cultural diversity, notably mentioning the country’s 2,500 political parties, which drew smiles and applause from the Ghanaian lawmakers. The address was attended by senior Ghanaian leaders, members of the Council of State, diplomats, political representatives, and the Indian diaspora.

A notable moment occurred when Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin acknowledged the parliamentarians’ choice of Indian attire, a gesture that resonated with Modi and elicited laughter in the chamber. One male MP wore a pagdi and bandhgala suit, while a female MP showcased traditional Indian dress, adding a cultural highlight to the event. Modi also invited Ghanaian lawmakers to visit India’s new Parliament building, further strengthening bilateral relations.

During the visit, President John Dramani Mahama conferred Ghana’s highest civilian honor, the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, on Modi, recognizing his contributions to India-Ghana relations. The two nations signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), including agreements to double trade within five years and collaborate on rare earth mineral mining. Modi’s address emphasized India’s commitment to Africa’s development and the importance of amplifying the Global South’s voice.

The visit, part of Modi’s five-nation tour, concluded with his departure for Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday, leaving behind a strengthened partnership and a memorable cultural exchange.
