New Delhi : China on Thursday rejected Nepal’s claim that the collapse of a “geological disaster dam” on the Chinese side triggered the massive destruction in Nepal, calling the allegation “fake news.” The Chinese embassy in Nepal also denied accusations that Beijing failed to warn Nepal about the impending disaster. It said the alleged absence of an early warning was not a factor in the deaths and disappearances.
The embassy said an earthquake or an earthquake-like glacier collapse occurred on the Nepali side on the morning of August 26. According to China, the incident triggered massive mudslides that caused heavy casualties and left people missing on both sides of the Gyirong-Rasuwagadhi border area.
The embassy said, “Accusation helps nothing” and “cooperation saves lives.” The remarks came as the Himalayan disaster continued to take a heavy toll, with at least 175 people killed and more than 1,300 reported missing following a powerful surge of debris comprising water, sediment, rocks and ice.
Countering Nepal’s statement, the embassy sought to present the “truth” on Facebook, saying: “An earthquake or earthquake-like glacier collapse occurred on the Nepali side on the morning of August 26, triggering huge mudslides, which caused significant casualties and left people missing on both the Nepali and Chinese sides of the Gyirong-Rasuwagadhi border region.”
China ended its statement with: “Accusation helps nothing” and “cooperation saves lives.” The disaster in the Himalayan region has claimed at least 175 lives and left more than 1,300 people missing after a “powerful surge” of debris, including water, sediments, rock and ice.
