Mitchell Starc Tears Through Bangladesh Batting, Takes Five Wickets for Just Four Runs

Mackay (Australia): After suffering a shock defeat in the first Test in Darwin, Australia came out in an extremely aggressive mood against Bangladesh in the second Test here today and ripped through the tourists’ top and middle order. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc, in particular, repeatedly struck the Bangladeshi batters like lightning.

After Bangladesh opted to bat, they managed just 35 runs in 23 overs by lunch and lost six wickets. Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 64 after lunch.

Mitchell Starc finished with six wickets for just 12 runs, Pat Cummins took three wickets for 25 runs, while Josh Hazlewood claimed one wicket for 18 runs.

Starc’s Five Victims — Four Dismissed for Ducks

Starc, the left-arm fast bowler, claimed five of Bangladesh’s first six wickets in just 22 balls, conceding only four runs in his 3.4 overs. The sixth wicket went to captain Pat Cummins.

Remarkably, four of Starc’s five victims were dismissed for ducks.

26-Run World Record Remains Intact

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s team had lost five wickets for just 12 runs, with all five dismissals coming at the hands of Starc.

When Bangladesh lost their fifth wicket at 12, it appeared they might break New Zealand’s 1955 world record for the lowest innings total in Test cricket — an all-out score of 26, set 71 years ago. However, that record survived.

Opener Shadman Islam and captain Shanto both lost their wickets to Starc with their very first balls. Mushfiqur Rahim, an experienced player with 105 Tests, was dismissed by Australia’s 74-Test veteran pacer Pat Cummins.

Miraz and Mahmud Stand Firm

After Bangladesh lost their sixth wicket for 21 in the 16th over, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (11 not out off 48 balls) and Hasan Mahmud (8 not out off 24 balls) stood firm against Australia’s pace attack of Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Webster.

The pair halted the collapse and put together an unbeaten 14-run partnership for the seventh wicket off 45 balls by lunch. However, Pat Cummins eventually broke the partnership.

Australia Lose Three Wickets for 41

After Bangladesh were bowled out for just 64, their bowlers hit back at Australia’s top order and reduced the hosts to three wickets down for 41 runs.
