Mumbai: Middle-order batter Siddhesh Lad has been appointed the new captain of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team. The new Ranji Trophy season will begin on October 11. The 34-year-old Siddhesh is known for his calm temperament and ability to make sensible decisions with a composed approach in pressure situations. In the 2025-26 season, he scored 774 runs at an average of 77.40 in just eight matches, including five centuries and a half-century.
Siddhesh Lad will replace pace bowler Shardul Thakur as captain. With the captaincy responsibility now off his shoulders, Shardul will be able to reduce his bowling workload. Thakur had been appointed captain in the 2025-26 season, replacing Ajinkya Rahane.
Under Thakur’s leadership, Mumbai reached the quarter-finals. Under Rahane, Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy title in the 2023-24 season. Mumbai have won the Ranji Trophy a record 42 times. Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer are among the contenders for the Mumbai captaincy in white-ball cricket.
Siddhesh Lad joined Goa in the 2022-23 season but returned to Mumbai after a one-year stint. Following a one-year cooling-off period, he rejoined the Mumbai team from the 2024-25 season.
