The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has asked IPL teams for their opinions on the league’s most debated rule, the Impact Player rule.
The teams have until Monday, August 31, to express their opinions on the controversial 12th-player rule, which has caused division in the league, especially during the previous season when there were numerous high-scoring games with worries about unfortunate bowlers.
The BCCI has also asked the teams for their opinions on a number of other topics, such as PMOA concerns, umpiring, practice sessions, and playing conditions. However, the Impact Player rule was the main topic of a recent brief message to the teams. Sports news agency Cricbuzz has access to the communique.
In the IPL, getting feedback on the just finished season is standard procedure. However, considering that it is anticipated that the Impact Player provision would be in effect for at least another season, it seems to be against the norm to specifically ask for answers about this clause.
At the pre-season Captains’ Meeting last year, the BCCI/IPL managers seemed to suggest that the regulation will be in place for an additional year. It’s interesting to note that the BCCI correspondence mentions that same Captains’ Meeting.
Axar Patel, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Shubman Gill are just a few of the prominent figures who have publicly criticized the notion.
The IPL has given the impression that there are supporters of the regulation. However, bringing up the matter when it seemed resolved creates an ambiguous situation. Whether the rule will be reviewed next season remains to be seen.
“It was decided at the IPL 2026 Captains’ Meeting that all teams will provide input on important cricket operations issues after the end of the competition. As a result, we ask that you talk about the following topics with your Cricket Operations teams and provide us with your combined input,” the BCCI/IPL mail says.
“Please make sure that we receive your input by August 31st.” The statement goes on, “This will assist us in gathering input from all franchises and forwarding the necessary review and action points ahead of the next season. We anticipate hearing from you within the allotted time frame.”
In addition to the Impact Player, the violation of anti-corruption rulings with trespassers observed in the PMOA area was a significant problem during the last IPL. It compelled the BCCI to provide owners, players, and support personnel with mid-season instructions. Under the subhead “Match Day Matters,” which includes “catering, PMOA and any other related matters,” the BCCI addresses these PMOA issues.
