MS Dhoni completed the 2026 Indian Premier League season without a single on-field appearance at the MA Chidambaram Stadium for Chennai Super Kings after sitting out Monday’s clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Yet the iconic wicketkeeper-batter still enjoyed a poignant evening at his adopted home ground.
It has been more than a year since Dhoni last played at Chepauk as an active cricketer. Nearly a year has passed since CSK’s final match of the previous season, an 83-run win over Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, which marked his most recent competitive appearance. Almost six years earlier, on Independence Day 2020, he retired from international cricket. While his India career concluded definitively, his IPL future with CSK has remained uncertain, even as he approaches his mid-forties.
Speculation about his full retirement intensified during the current campaign. Plagued by a calf strain, the legendary player stayed on the bench throughout the season, though he continued to attend practice sessions. Fans arrived at Chepauk on Monday hoping to witness Dhoni in action one final time at home, especially with playoffs qualification at stake.

The question of his participation dominated pre-match discussions. During the toss, commentator Ravi Shastri asked CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad directly whether Dhoni would play, electrifying the crowd. Gaikwad confirmed Dhoni was present but not fit enough to feature, opting to bat first after winning the toss.
For the first time in franchise history, ‘Thala’ completed a full season without appearing at Chepauk. A potential absence in Friday’s game against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad could make him one of the most decorated players to go an entire IPL without playing a match. CSK’s loss further dampened spirits, leaving their playoff hopes precarious.
Yet CSK supporters, renowned for their unwavering loyalty, found solace in fleeting moments with their hero. Dhoni received thunderous applause when he joined teammates for the traditional end-of-season photoshoot—rivaling the roar reserved for his batting entrances. During the lap of honour after the match, fans set aside the defeat, focusing solely on the man who delivered five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 triumphs.
The occasion gained added significance as Dhoni reunited with former India and CSK teammate Suresh Raina, who retired from internationals shortly after him in 2020. A striking “Thala Forever” tifo in the stands underscored the deep bond between Dhoni and Chepauk, his spiritual home despite residing in Ranchi.
Similar emotional scenes unfolded in 2023, when many believed Dhoni’s career had ended, including a memorable interaction with Sunil Gavaskar. Three years on, uncertainty persists over his yellow jersey future. If this marks his final appearance at Chepauk, the venue delivered a heartfelt send-off worthy of the legend.
