MI vs GT: Tilak Varma Blazes Maiden IPL Ton Off 45 Balls to Power Mumbai Indians to 199/x Against Gujarat Titans

Ahmedabad: Tilak Varma announced himself on the biggest stage with a blistering maiden Indian Premier League century, single-handedly rescuing Mumbai Indians from a precarious position to post 199 runs against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday.

Invited to bat first by GT skipper Shubman Gill, Mumbai Indians found themselves in early trouble before Varma took charge of the innings. The left-hander remained unbeaten through the chaos, anchoring a total that now demands Gujarat Titans score 200 runs to claim their fourth victory of IPL 2026.

Varma reached the milestone in just 45 balls, laced with 8 fours and 7 sixes a knock that single-handedly shifted the momentum of a struggling MI side. The century came on the final delivery of the 20th over, capping a remarkable individual effort under pressure.

The innings was not without its drama. Varma took a painful blow to the groin during his knock, collapsing to the ground momentarily, but he refused to yield picking himself up and batting through to the end. Earlier in the innings, he dismantled bowler Ashok Sharma for 26 runs in a single over, a passage of play that visibly energised the dressing room. His captain Hardik Pandya, watching from the non-striker’s end during that assault, was seen in an animated exchange with Varma and the batter responded with intent.

When the hundred came, Varma celebrated with unmistakable purpose a pointed gesture aimed squarely at his detractors.

The century arrives at a critical juncture for Mumbai Indians, who have won just one game this season their tournament opener and dropped four consecutive matches since. Whether the total proves enough will be determined by how Gujarat Titans respond in their chase.
