New Delhi: A powerful explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening killed at least eight people and injured several others, prompting authorities to issue a high alert across multiple states, including Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Kolkata. Security agencies have stepped up patrolling and surveillance in key areas as the investigation into the cause of the blast continues.
Multiple States on Alert
Following the explosion, major Indian cities have been placed on heightened security watch. In Mumbai, security has been intensified at public places, transport hubs, and other vital installations. Kolkata Police have also activated their entire force, initiating citywide security checks to prevent any similar incidents.
In Uttar Pradesh, particularly in Lucknow, authorities have instructed police teams to increase monitoring and strengthen surveillance in sensitive locations. Haryana has also stepped up security, with officials directed to maintain strict vigilance across districts.
Explosion Near Red Fort Metro
According to the Delhi Fire Department, the explosion occurred in a car near Gate Number 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station. The impact was so strong that flames spread to nearby vehicles, damaging three to four cars. Firefighters received an emergency call at 7:05 PM and quickly dispatched seven fire tenders to the scene. A team from the Delhi Police Special Cell also reached the site to assess the situation.
A senior official from the fire department told The Hindu that the blast, reportedly from a car parked near the metro gate, caused significant damage and injuries. The intensity of the explosion shattered window panes of nearby vehicles and buildings.
Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos following the explosion. One injured man said the blast seemed to come from a Swift car parked ahead of his auto-rickshaw. “There was something inside that car that suddenly exploded,” he said.
Another witness, who was nearby the local gurdwara, recounted, “We heard a very loud sound and couldn’t figure out what had happened. Several cars were damaged completely.”
Visuals circulating on social media showed flames and thick plumes of smoke billowing from the site, with firefighters working to control the fire as terrified locals gathered at a distance.
Authorities have yet to confirm the precise cause of the blast but have not ruled out foul play. Investigations are underway, with multiple security agencies coordinating to trace the origin and motive behind the explosion.
