New Delhi: A British Airways flight bound for Chicago was forced to turn back to London after declaring an emergency over Ireland, following a dramatic descent of about 28,000 feet, according to flight tracking data.
Flight BA295, operating from London Heathrow to Chicago O’Hare, activated the international emergency transponder code 7700 while flying over Ireland. The Boeing 777-200ER had climbed to roughly 37,000 feet before descending rapidly to around 9,000 feet.
The aircraft subsequently diverted back toward London rather than continuing its transatlantic journey, disrupting the flight’s scheduled service to Chicago.
The precise reason for the emergency remains unclear. British Airways had not immediately disclosed what prompted the sudden descent, and there was no confirmed indication that the incident was caused by a mechanical problem, a medical emergency or another specific issue.
The 7700 code used by BA295 is a standard aviation signal for a general emergency. It alerts air traffic controllers that an aircraft requires priority assistance but does not, by itself, reveal the nature of the problem.
Flight-tracking records identified the aircraft involved as a Boeing 777-200ER. The plane departed London Heathrow’s Terminal 5 at around 11:50 a.m. local time and was scheduled to make the approximately eight hour 40 minute journey to Chicago.
The incident comes shortly after another widely reported aviation emergency involving a flydubai flight that was forced to divert during its journey. However, there is no indication that the two incidents are connected.
The sudden descent of BA295 drew attention because commercial aircraft normally cruise at altitudes of around 30,000 to 40,000 feet on long haul flights. A substantial change in altitude can occur for several operational reasons, including turbulence, cabin pressure concerns, medical situations or technical issues, although no specific cause has been confirmed in this case.
As of the latest available information, British Airways had not publicly provided a detailed explanation for the emergency. Further information is expected once the airline or relevant aviation authorities establish what happened aboard the aircraft.
