The southwest monsoon continues to make steady progress across large parts of northern and western India, bringing widespread rainfall and prompting weather authorities to issue alerts for several regions. On Thursday, the monsoon advanced further into additional areas of Gujarat, the remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh, the whole of Delhi, most of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and parts of Rajasthan. Conditions remain supportive for more advancement in the coming days.
Strong westerly winds are expected to dominate over southern peninsular India and central parts of the country until July 8, while an easterly wind anomaly may influence the north Bay of Bengal, eastern, central, and adjoining northwestern regions. Moderate to intense spells of rain are likely in several places, with some areas facing the possibility of heavier downpours.
In the Mumbai metropolitan region, an orange alert remains in effect for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar, signaling the likelihood of moderate to intense rainfall. Parts of the city have already recorded significant precipitation, contributing to waterlogging and traffic disruptions in low-lying areas. Officials have urged residents to exercise caution amid these conditions.
Tragically, a 17-year-old girl lost her life in Thane’s Mumbra area after coming into contact with a live electric wire submerged in rainwater. Local accounts suggest an exposed wire may have caused electricity to spread through the accumulated water, leading to the fatal electrocution. The incident highlights the hazards posed by heavy rains in urban settings with vulnerable infrastructure.

Further north, an orange alert has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand’s Nainital and Bageshwar districts on Friday. The monsoon reached the state on June 30 and has since become active statewide. Light to moderate showers were observed across various parts on Thursday.
In Delhi and surrounding areas, moderate rain is expected to persist, adding to the monsoon activity that has already brought relief from summer heat in many northern cities. Travelers and residents are advised to stay updated on local conditions, as spells of rain accompanied by gusty winds could affect daily commutes and outdoor activities.
