India Lose in Hockey World Cup, Now Their Hopes Rest on England vs Argentina

Amstelveen: India suffered a 1-3 defeat against hosts and Olympic champions the Netherlands in their men’s Hockey World Cup knockout-round clash here. India will now hope that England defeat Argentina to keep their semifinal hopes alive. If that does not happen, India’s hopes of reaching the semifinals will be over.

The Netherlands are the reigning Olympic champions, and defeating them was always going to be a major challenge for Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates. India’s only goal was scored by captain Harmanpreet in the 52nd minute through a penalty corner.

The first two quarters were closely contested and ended goalless, but the Netherlands came out strongly in the third quarter and scored three goals in quick succession against India.

The three goals for the Netherlands were scored by Duco Telgenkamp in the 41st minute, Jip Janssen in the 51st minute and Thijs van Dam in the 55th minute.
