Zubin Bharucha has been named Director of Performance for the five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians. Prior to the Rajasthan Royals’ two-year suspension, the 56-year-old former first-class cricket player served as team director from 2008 to 2015. After a brief tenure with the Delhi Daredevils, he assumed the role of Director of Cricket Operations for the team from 2018 to 2025.
Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and most recently Vaibhav Sooryavanshi were among the emerging Indian players whom Bharucha was credited with helping to nurture during his time with the Royals. According to a Mumbai Indians press release, he would “work closely with the existing multi-disciplinary leadership group across all performance disciplines within the MI ecosystem.”
Bharucha will oversee the team’s off-season performance program and collaborate with head coach Mahela Jayawardene and his coaching staff.
The Mumbai Indians, one of the two clubs to have won the IPL five times, haven’t won since 2020 and have only made it to the playoffs twice since. Their dismal run includes two wooden spoons and one ninth-place finish.
