Thunderstorm Alert Hits Mumbai as Heavy Rains Set to Soak the City

Mumbai and surrounding regions are bracing for intense weather as meteorological authorities have issued an orange alert for the city, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall, and strong gusty winds. The alert, issued early Monday morning, remains in effect until 10 am, with isolated gusts potentially reaching 30 to 40 kilometers per hour.

Authorities forecast scattered showers with gusty winds across several coastal and nearby districts, including Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. A yellow alert is active for these areas, signaling the possibility of continued unsettled conditions in the coming days. The broader monsoon system is expected to become fully active across the region starting June 25.

Recent rainfall in parts of Mumbai on Sunday provided some relief, lowering temperatures after a period of intense heat and high humidity. The showers helped ease discomfort for residents following several days of uncomfortable conditions.

In Pune and western Maharashtra, pre-monsoon activity brought significant rains on Sunday. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in Pune and the Pune Ghatmatha areas on Monday, with the monsoon expected to advance across the entire western Maharashtra belt shortly. A yellow alert for thunderstorms has been placed for Pune, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, and Solapur districts.

Light to moderate rainfall is predicted for districts in North Maharashtra, including Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, and Ahilyanagar. In the Marathwada region, Beed, Latur, and Dharashiv districts are under a yellow alert for light to moderate rains and possible thunderstorms. Lighter showers are expected in Jalna, Parbhani, Hingoli, and Nanded.

These developments mark a shift toward more active monsoon weather, bringing much-needed precipitation to the area while prompting caution among residents. Officials advise people to stay updated on local conditions, avoid low-lying areas during heavy downpours, and exercise care while traveling due to potential disruptions from strong winds and reduced visibility.

The current weather pattern reflects the typical progression of the monsoon season, with varying intensities across different parts of Maharashtra. Residents in alerted zones should prepare for sudden weather changes, including the risk of localized flooding or waterlogging in vulnerable spots. As conditions evolve, continued monitoring will help minimize impacts on daily life and infrastructure.
