Tamil Nadu Seafood Plant: Ammonia Leak Claims Seven Lives

In a devastating industrial incident in Tamil Nadu, seven women lost their lives following a significant ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing facility. The accident occurred in Manjangaranai, near Periyapalayam in the Thiruvallur district, highlighting ongoing concerns over safety protocols in such units.

The leak took place on Sunday, affecting a large number of workers at the site. Emergency responders quickly moved the injured individuals to nearby medical facilities for urgent care. Authorities reported that a total of 67 workers required immediate medical attention after exposure to the hazardous gas.

Medical teams distributed the patients across local hospitals to manage the influx effectively. Forty-six individuals received treatment at Vels Hospital, while twenty-one were admitted to Venkateshwara Hospital. In addition, nine of the most critically affected patients were transferred by ambulance to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai for advanced care.

The victims, all women, succumbed to the effects of the gas exposure while undergoing treatment. Ammonia, commonly used in industrial refrigeration processes within seafood export units, poses severe health risks when released in high concentrations, potentially leading to respiratory failure and other life-threatening complications.
