Mumbai Breathes Easier with Crisp Skies and Cool Breeze, But Air Quality Dips to Moderate 129

Mumbai: Residents of Mumbai can look forward to sunny skies and comfortable conditions in the coming days, as forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The metropolis has seen a noticeable drop in temperatures over the past few days, making the weather feel refreshingly cooler than recent weeks.

According to IMD’s latest update on Wednesday, the city and its suburbs will enjoy clear skies, with daytime highs expected to reach around 32 degrees Celsius and nighttime lows settling near 20 degrees Celsius. No precipitation has been recorded recently.

In south Mumbai’s Colaba area, the mercury dipped to a minimum of 22.4 degrees Celsius, accompanied by 74 percent relative humidity. Rainfall remained at zero, contributing to a seasonal total of 216.3 millimetres so far.

At the Santacruz observatory in the suburbs, the low was even cooler at 18.6 degrees Celsius, with humidity at 60 percent and no rain reported. The area’s cumulative seasonal rainfall stands at 106.6 millimetres.

Nearby regions in the Konkan division mirrored the dry pattern. Ratnagiri logged a minimum of 19.6 degrees Celsius with 84 percent humidity and zero rainfall, bringing its seasonal tally to 405.7 millimetres. Dahanu saw 17.6 degrees Celsius at the lowest, with 74 percent humidity and no precipitation, totaling 184.6 millimetres for the season.

In Pune, temperatures fell to 13.7 degrees Celsius with 69 percent humidity and no rain, while seasonal rainfall held at 70.9 millimetres. Satara experienced hazy conditions with a minimum of 15 degrees Celsius and 81 percent humidity. The hill station of Mahabaleshwar emerged as the region’s chilliest spot, recording 12.5 degrees Celsius without any rainfall.

Despite the inviting weather, Mumbai greeted Wednesday with a hazy start, prompting alerts about declining air quality, though the mist cleared as the day progressed.

Data from the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app indicated the city’s air quality index (AQI) at 129, falling into the ‘moderate’ category.

Specialists caution that air quality could deteriorate further with the onset of winter, similar to trends observed in the 2023-24 season. As western India transitions from extended monsoon rains to colder months, Mumbai has faced consistently poorer AQI levels during this shift since 2022, especially between November and January. This is attributed to lower atmospheric moisture and significantly reduced wind speeds compared to the rainy season.
