On Monday, July 20, 2026, Mumbai police issued prohibitory orders prohibiting gatherings of five or more people in public areas from July 23 to August 6. According to officials, the action was taken because of concerns of a breach of peace and disturbance of public calm.
According to the Maharashtra Police Act, the order, which was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan, also forbids musical bands, loudspeakers, amplifying devices, crackers, and processions, among other things.
“The restrictions will remain in force from 12.01 a.m. on July 23 until midnight on August 6 across the areas under the jurisdiction of the Commissioner of Police of Mumbai,” the directive added. Marriage ceremonies and associated events, funeral rallies and processions, statutory meetings of businesses, clubs, and cooperative societies, social gatherings of clubs and associations for regular business, and assemblies at movie theaters and other public entertainment venues are all exempt. According to the ruling, information from many sources regarding a “likelihood of breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquillity, and also there is grave danger to human lives and loss of properties” served as the basis for the decision.
Academic activities in schools, colleges, and educational institutions, assemblies at industries, stores, and facilities for regular commerce and business, and meetings at courts, government offices, and municipal bodies for official business are all exempt from the decree.
Other gatherings and processions authorized by the corresponding zonal DCPs and their supervisory officials are likewise exempt.
“Legal proceedings or investigations relating to violations committed during the period of enforcement may continue even after the restrictions lapse, and penalties for contravention may be imposed as if the order remained in force,” the order added.
According to police, copies of the order would be displayed in public spaces, courts, and government buildings, as well as through media and public announcements.
