Heavy Rain Likely Across 27 Maharashtra Districts Including Mumbai and Pune

The monsoon is set to regain strength across large parts of Maharashtra, with medium to heavy rainfall expected in 27 districts over the next five days. Areas under the alert include Mumbai and the entire Konkan region, Vidarbha, Khandesh, as well as Nashik, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The remaining nine districts, mainly in Marathwada along with Ahilyanagar and Solapur, are likely to receive only light showers.

Mumbai has already recorded strong seasonal rainfall. At Colaba, cumulative rainfall till the morning of 13 August stood at 1,725.2 mm, slightly exceeding the long-period average of 1,716.8 mm expected by the end of August. Santacruz has received around 2,100 mm since 1 June and needs roughly another 104 mm to match its average of 2,205.8 mm by the end of September.

Weather forecasts indicate that the Konkan coast will continue to receive above-normal rainfall for the next two weeks. Between 13 and 20 August, and again from 20 to 27 August, the region is expected to see higher-than-average precipitation. This could bring additional spells of intense rain to Mumbai and its suburbs, helping Santacruz close the remaining gap.

A low-pressure area over the West Bengal coast is moving northwestward. Conflicting wind patterns over districts such as Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Amravati, Nagpur and Gondia are creating conditions favourable for rain. These systems are likely to influence Konkan, Vidarbha, Khandesh and parts of central Maharashtra, leading to moderate to heavy showers in several places.

In and around Pune, light rain is expected over the next three days across much of central Maharashtra, while the ghat areas may experience heavy to very heavy downpours. After a relatively quieter period in early August, the city recorded 1.3 mm of rain on Thursday, with maximum and minimum temperatures of 28.4°C and 22.1°C respectively.

Overall conditions remain supportive of an active monsoon phase in the coming days, particularly along the coast and in the western and eastern parts of the state. Residents in the affected districts are advised to stay updated on local weather developments.
