Mumbai: Mumbai the country’s economic capital, has been hit by yet another major blow of inflation to the common man’s household budget. The Mumbai Milk Producers Association (MMPA) has decided to raise the wholesale price of milk by a straight ₹9 per litre. Following this hike, the wholesale price of fresh buffalo milk will rise from ₹93 to ₹102 per litre.
New Rates to Remain in Effect Until February 28, 2027
According to the MMPA, the new milk rates will come into effect from September 1, 2026, and will remain applicable until February 28, 2027. This means Mumbaikars will have to purchase milk at the higher price for the next six months, after which the rates will be reviewed again. Prices were last revised in February 2026, when they were increased from ₹91 to ₹93. However, this ₹9 hike marks the single largest increase in MMPA’s 70-year history.

According to milk producers, the cost of cattle feed, fodder, and rearing milch animals has risen sharply. Items used in cattle feed, such as grains, tuvar chuni and chana chuni, have seen a price surge of nearly 25 percent. In addition, rising costs of fodder and oil cake have made it necessary to pass the increased production cost directly onto wholesale prices.
Over 3,000 Retailers Affected, Consumer Budgets to Take a Hit
According to MMPA Chairman C.K. Singh, milk in Mumbai is sold through more than 3,000 chiller retailers. Since ₹102 is the wholesale rate, the final price reaching consumers in the retail market may vary. With major festivals such as Ganeshotsav and Navratri approaching in the coming days, the rising cost of milk, curd, paneer and sweets is set to disrupt household budgets for ordinary families.
