Fact Check: Maharashtra DGIPR Debunks Viral Census 2027 Marathi Language Rumour

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Directorate General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR) has issued a clarification regarding a misleading social media message connected to Census 2027 and the Marathi language. According to a report by Free Press Journal, the department stated that the viral claim circulating online is completely false and appealed to citizens not to believe or forward such content.

In a fact-check post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, the DGIPR said that the message falsely instructing Marathi-speaking citizens to mention only Marathi during census registration has no official basis. The department clarified that no such directive has been issued in relation to Census 2027.

The viral message reportedly claimed that the long-pending Census exercise had begun in Maharashtra and would take place through both online and offline methods. It further alleged that if people listed English or any other language alongside Marathi, their census entry could become invalid and reduce the official count of Marathi speakers.

The misleading post also attempted to connect language data with government fund allocation and urged Marathi-speaking citizens to share the message widely on social media platforms. However, DGIPR categorically rejected these claims and warned people against spreading unverified information.

The department advised the public to depend only on authentic and objective information available through official census-related websites, including Census India portals. Authorities reiterated that citizens should verify facts through government sources before circulating any message online.
