India Women’s Hockey Team Put Up a Great Fight to Hold Olympic Silver Medallists China to a Draw

Amstelveen (Netherlands): After India’s men’s team thrashed Wales 3-1 on the opening day of the Hockey World Cup on Saturday, the Indian women’s team on Sunday produced a spirited performance to prevent a stronger China from securing victory in a fiercely contested match. The opening league match between India and China ended in a 2-2 draw.

China’s women’s team won the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. China are ranked fourth in women’s hockey, while India are ninth. However, the Indian team showed its strength by holding China to a thrilling draw. India could have won the match if they had been awarded a penalty corner in the final quarter.



For India, Navneet scored in the eighth minute, while Deepika found the net in the 26th minute. China’s Zhang Ying scored in the 14th minute before Ma Ning equalised in the 39th minute with a goal from a penalty corner.

The Indian women’s team will next face South Africa on Tuesday, August 18. In the men’s competition, India will take on England on Monday, August 17.
