Illegal Horse Cart Race on Gorai Beach Sparks FIR, Betting Racket Suspected After Clash With Animal Rights Activists

An illegal horse cart race organised without administrative permission on a Mumbai beach has triggered a police complaint and a wider investigation into suspected illegal betting, after a confrontation between animal rights activists and the crowd turned into a law and order flashpoint.
The race took place at approximately 6:30 am on April 6 at Gorai Beach, with no official approval or safety measures in place. Despite the absence of any permissions, hundreds of spectators gathered at the site, turning the otherwise quiet locality into a chaotic scene amid dust clouds and the sound of galloping horses.
The incident came to public attention after animal rights activist Pallavi Patil arrived at the location with her team to document alleged cruelty towards the animals involved in the race, according to a report by local news portal BharatNewsExpress. Their attempts to film the event were met with resistance from members of the crowd and the organisers, and a heated confrontation broke out. Allegations of misbehaviour against the activists followed, and a complaint was subsequently filed at Gorai Police Station, with an FIR now registered in the case.
Illegal Betting Racket Suspected
Police suspect the event extended well beyond entertainment. The scale of the gathering, combined with the complete absence of official permissions, has raised concerns about an organised illegal betting operation functioning behind the scenes. Locals have claimed that wagers worth lakhs of rupees were placed on the races, pointing to a potentially structured syndicate. Authorities have launched an investigation and are currently examining video footage to identify those involved in both organising and participating in the event.
The incident has also brought animal welfare and public safety concerns to the fore. Activists have underlined that such races frequently involve cruelty, with animals allegedly compelled to run at high speeds under stressful and unsafe conditions. Police stated that further action will follow based on the findings of the ongoing probe, as efforts continue to trace the organisers behind the unauthorised event.
