Maharashtra Heatwave: 23 Districts on Alert as Administration Deploys Emergency Measures Across Regions

Maharashtra’s battle against a punishing heatwave intensified this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placing 23 districts under alert as temperatures continued to climb across the state. While Vidarbha remains the worst-hit zone, district administrations across Maharashtra have scaled up ground-level response measures under the state’s Heat Action Plan.

In Vidarbha, where cities like Nagpur, Chandrapur and Amravati are recording temperatures close to 45°C, local authorities have activated emergency heat protocols. MNREGA and construction work has been rescheduled to early morning and evening slots to keep workers out of peak afternoon heat. Water tankers are being dispatched to rural areas facing shortages, and in Chandrapur’s mining belt, authorities have made cooling breaks, hydration points and worker health monitoring mandatory.

Marathwada districts, including Jalna and Parbhani, are seeing district collectors order school closures or reduced timings during peak afternoon hours. Primary health centres have been stocked with ORS, IV fluids and emergency medicines, while village-level awareness drives are educating residents on recognising early signs of heatstroke.

In North Maharashtra’s Khandesh region covering Jalgaon and Dhule the administration’s priority is drinking water supply management, ensuring tankers reach remote and underserved pockets. Agricultural workers have been advised against fieldwork between 12 pm and 4 pm, with local officials actively monitoring compliance on the ground.

Pune and Nashik in Madhya Maharashtra are taking an urban-focused approach. Municipal corporations have begun installing temporary shaded shelters and water kiosks at busy intersections, while urban local bodies are pushing cool roof initiatives and targeted heat-mitigation measures in slum neighbourhoods, where trapped heat can drive indoor temperatures significantly higher.

Along the Konkan coast covering Mumbai, Thane and Palghar the challenge is humid heat stress rather than dry scorching heat. Authorities have issued advisories for fisherfolk, traffic police and delivery workers, focusing on hydration access and mandatory rest breaks. Hospitals across Mumbai and neighbouring districts are on high alert for heat exhaustion cases, with warm nights and elevated humidity compounding the strain on residents.

The state government’s Heat Action Plan is operating at full capacity, backed by real-time temperature monitoring, early warning systems and coordinated response across departments. Public messaging is consistently reinforcing two directives: avoid outdoor exposure during peak hours and stay hydrated.

Some respite may be approaching. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms and light rainfall from April 19, which could bring temporary relief from the relentless heat across affected regions.
