On Tuesday night, a 15-foot Ganesh idol that was being transported from Vidyavihar to Dharavi crashed at LBS Road in Kurla (West). It is said that the idol’s vehicle lost balance while crossing a huge speed breaker. The Om Shakti Foundation, a Ganesh mandal in Dharavi, was bringing the idol for the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi celebration.
This is the second recent occurrence of this kind. On August 22, a 22-foot-tall, two-ton Ganesh idol from Bhuleshwarcha Raja Mandal fell off the platform it was being carried on and crashed into the crowd that was following the “Aagman” parade in Bhuleshwar. There were two fatalities among the procession’s participants.
Two participants in the parade, Santosh Jaiswal, 28, and Rohit Jaiswal, 25, passed out on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m., according to local corporator Mrinal Turde. One was sent to Kurla’s Bhabha Hospital, while the other was brought to Habib Hospital. After receiving treatment, the two were released, according to V B Nagar police.
Mandals have called for pothole-free roads and speed breakers to facilitate the transportation of idols from the workshop to their respective mandals. However, local corporator Ashraf Azmi stated that the Kurla speed breaker—despite its size—was required because there are three schools along the route.
Representatives of the mandal then submerged the idol in Sheetal Talao.
