Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has adopted a stern approach against major defaulters who are deliberately avoiding payment of property tax. Seizure notices are being issued to defaulters for outstanding amounts. Those who fail to clear the dues within the stipulated period will face property auction proceedings in the next phase, along with the seizure notices. The civic body has issued seizure notices to major defaulters, which include plots, residential buildings, commercial buildings, commercial premises, industrial premises, and others.

Property tax is considered the main source of revenue for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. In the current financial year 2025-26, the civic body has so far collected only Rs 5,426 crore and 81 lakh as property tax. A large-scale campaign has been undertaken for tax collection in the coming two months, under which the BMC is sending notices to defaulters to recover pending tax amounts.
