India-Flagged Ship Sunk By Projectile In Red Sea, 13 Indians Onboard Rescued

On Tuesday, a projectile struck an India-flagged cargo ship in the Red Sea off the western coast of Yemen, causing it to overturn and sink. Thirteen Indian sailors and one Yemeni were among the ship’s fourteen crew members. Yemeni soldiers saved all 14 sailors, who are now receiving medical care.

About 13 nautical miles south of the Houthi-held port city of Hodeidah, the ship, MSV Faize Noore Oliya, was sunk.

The coast guard and navy troops worked together to save the sailors, according to a statement from the Yemeni National Resistance Force, also known as the Guards of the Republic.

The “unprovoked” attack on the ship close to Yemeni waters was vehemently denounced by India in a statement.

According to Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, a projectile struck the Indian ship, causing it to capsize and sink.

He stated that in order to guarantee the safety of Indian seafarers in the area and to give the rescued crew the support they require, he has directed the Director General Maritime Administration (DGMA) to act immediately in conjunction with all agencies.

‘India strongly condemns this unprovoked attack on the defenseless mechanised sailing vessel. The safety of our people is our supreme priority & I am relieved to inform that ALL 14 seafarers (including 13 Indians) have been safely rescued by the Yemeni Coast Guard and brought to the Port of Mokha,” he wrote on X.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs added that the Embassy in Riyadh is keeping a careful eye on the situation and actively working with Yemeni authorities to ensure the crew’s safety and security.

Additionally, India called the attacks on Indian vessels “deeply worrisome” and demanded that commercial vessels no longer be targeted.

The Houthis, who are supported by Iran, announced a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia last month, potentially creating a new front in the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. The action has increased the risk to international trade and energy supply outside of the Gulf.

As members of Iran’s Axis of Resistance, the rebels are in charge of northern Yemen, including the Bab el-Mandeb coast, which is the strait at the mouth of the Red Sea. The strait, sometimes referred to as the “Gate of Tears,” links the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Aden, and the Red Sea.
