Rishabh Pant Breaks Gilchrist’s World Record And Creates History

Galle: Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was dismissed for just 39 runs in India’s first innings against Sri Lanka in the first Test here on Sunday, giving his wicket to new off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha. However, many may have missed the fact that Pant had created a world record on Saturday. He broke the 18-year-old world record held by Australian great wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist.

On Saturday, India finished the opening day of the Test against Sri Lanka at 288 for two. Rishabh Pant was unbeaten on 27, and his knock included a six. That six earned him a world record. He also shared a 71-run partnership for the third wicket with Devdutt Padikkal.

Pant has now become the wicketkeeper to hit the most sixes in Test cricket on foreign soil. He has 57 Test sixes outside India, moving ahead of Gilchrist, who had 56.

Pant has now hit 98 sixes in Test cricket overall. With two more sixes, he will become the first Indian and only the fourth player in the world to reach 100 sixes in Test cricket. Ben Stokes holds the record for the most sixes in Test cricket with 138. Brendon McCullum is second with 107 sixes, while Gilchrist is third with 100. Pant is fourth on the list with 98 sixes. He is currently level with Chris Gayle and Tim Southee, who have also hit 98 sixes.
