London: Just weeks after making headlines for its grand UK debut and drawing long queues outside its doors, Haldiram’s flagship restaurant in London’s Leicester Square has temporarily closed, leaving many customers wondering what happened. The company, however, says there’s no cause for concern. The closure is the result of planned electrical infrastructure work in the area and is expected to be temporary.
Haldiram’s UK confirmed that the restaurant has remained shut since July 21 due to scheduled work being carried out by UK Power Networks (UKPN). The company said the maintenance work, which also includes gas infrastructure upgrades around the property, is beyond its control and is necessary to ensure public safety. While an exact reopening date has not been announced, the brand says it will welcome customers back as soon as the work is completed.
The closure comes at a time when the restaurant was enjoying overwhelming popularity. Ever since opening its doors in June 2026, the Leicester Square outlet had become one of the city’s most talked about dining destinations. Videos of customers waiting in long lines quickly went viral on social media, with many calling it a slice of India in the heart of London. The restaurant attracted not only the Indian diaspora but also tourists and local residents eager to try its famous snacks and traditional North Indian dishes.
Spread across nearly 3,000 square feet, the restaurant offers seating for around 140 guests, including both indoor and outdoor spaces. Unlike Haldiram’s quick service outlets in India, the London restaurant has been designed as a premium casual dining destination. Its menu features popular favourites such as chole bhature, pav bhaji, raj kachori, chaat, dosas, thalis, sweets, and beverages, while also introducing a few London exclusive desserts. Customers can also purchase Haldiram’s packaged snacks and sweets from a dedicated retail section inside the outlet.
News of the closure sparked speculation online, with several social media users questioning whether the restaurant had run into operational difficulties. However, Haldiram has clarified that the shutdown is not related to business performance, licensing issues, or food safety concerns. A notice displayed outside the restaurant attributes the closure to utility upgrade work, and the company’s social media channels continue to reassure customers with the message, “We’ll be back soon.”
The restaurant’s successful launch marked a significant milestone for Haldiram’s international expansion. Founded in Bikaner in 1937, the company has grown into one of India’s most recognised food brands, exporting its products to more than 80 countries while operating restaurants in several international markets. The London outlet represents the brand’s first major restaurant in the UK and is expected to serve as a gateway for its broader expansion across Europe.
Although the temporary closure has disappointed many customers who had planned visits during the summer, it has done little to dampen enthusiasm for the brand. Judging by the response since its opening, Haldiram’s has already established itself as one of London’s most sought after destinations for authentic Indian food. Once the infrastructure work is complete, the restaurant is expected to reopen and continue building on the momentum that made its UK debut one of the biggest food stories of the year.
