Seoul: After a hiatus of nearly four years due to mandatory military service, BTS has staged an extraordinary comeback, releasing their fifth full-length studio album ARIRANG and delivering a historic public concert that has redefined benchmarks in global music.
Named after the traditional Korean folk song “Arirang”—a symbol of national resilience and identity through centuries of hardship—the album marks the group’s first major collective work in six years. It serves as a deliberate nod to their Korean roots amid worldwide acclaim.
The release has generated unprecedented numbers. On Spotify, ARIRANG amassed 110 million streams on its debut day, claiming the title of the most-streamed K-pop album in a single day on the platform and ranking as the 12th highest first-day streaming performance for any album overall. All 14 tracks simultaneously claimed the top 14 positions on Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart, an unprecedented feat in the service’s history. This achievement surpassed opening-day streams from major English-language artists including Bad Bunny, Drake, Travis Scott, and Playboi Carti.

Physical sales proved equally dominant. According to South Korea’s Hanteo Chart, the album sold one million copies in under ten minutes upon release—the fastest milestone of its kind—and reached 3.98 million units by the end of the first day, eclipsing BTS’s previous single-day record of 3.37 million set by Map of the Soul: 7 in 2020. Projections indicate cumulative sales could exceed six million copies in the first week.
On iTunes, the lead single “Swim” topped the Top Songs chart in over 90 countries, while the album led Albums charts in 88 regions. The “Swim” music video garnered 36 million views and four million likes in its first 24 hours on YouTube, securing the number-one trending spot in nearly 70 countries.
The economic impact is substantial, with Seoul-based analysts estimating the full comeback—including the album, upcoming tour, merchandise, and related ventures—could generate around 2.9 trillion Korean won (approximately $1.93 billion), placing it in the realm of major global tours like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
The album features collaborations with producers such as Diplo, Flume, Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), Mike WiLL Made-It, and JPEGMafia, blending diverse styles while centering the “Arirang” melody in subtle yet powerful ways. Members have highlighted its focus on identity and universality. j-hope described the project as showcasing “who we are, our identity and our roots,” while RM noted the folk song’s universal emotional resonance.
Culminating the initial wave, BTS performed at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul on March 21—the largest public concert in South Korean history—with an estimated 260,000 attendees, including 22,000 in the inner zone and others filling surrounding streets. Over one million viewed the Netflix live stream globally. The event marked their first full-group show since October 2022. RM performed despite an injured ankle, using a stool selectively but remaining fully engaged.
The setlist included five new tracks upfront, followed by classics like “Butter,” “MIC Drop,” and “Dynamite,” closing with “Mikrokosmos.” A standout moment featured traditional hanbok-clad vocalists weaving the “Arirang” melody into “Body to Body” on folk instruments.
The Arirang World Tour begins April 9 in Goyang, South Korea, spanning 82 dates across 34 regions—the group’s most extensive to date.
