Vikas Khanna Honoured By New York Governor Kathy Hochul During AAPI Heritage Month

New York Governor Kathy Hochul recognised celebrity chef Vikas Khanna during AAPI Heritage Month celebrations for his contribution to global cuisine and cultural representation.
Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna has been honoured by New York State Governor Kathy Hochul for his remarkable contribution to the culinary world and cultural representation. According to Hindustan Times and PTI, Khanna received a “Special Citation” during the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month celebrations held in Albany, the capital of New York State.
The recognition marked a historic milestone, as Khanna stated on social media that he is the first Indian to receive this honour in New York State history. Calling the moment “deeply emotional and humbling,” the Michelin-starred chef said the award symbolised much more than personal success. He described it as a celebration of identity, diversity, hope, and representation for the Indian community in the United States.
Speaking at the event on May 9, Khanna said that inviting an Indian chef to such a platform reflected the growing recognition of Indian stories and culture on the global stage. He also praised New York City for standing by immigrant communities and protecting vulnerable people, noting that immigrants often face the greatest challenges.
Governor Hochul, while addressing the gathering, highlighted the importance of unity and diversity during the AAPI Heritage Month celebrations. She stressed that New York’s strength comes from its multicultural communities and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting migrant populations.
Khanna, originally from Amritsar, has earned global recognition through his restaurants, books, films, and television appearances, becoming one of the most recognised faces of Indian cuisine internationally.
