Mumbai: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has advised against speculation over ‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma’s future, saying the former India captain is playing very well and there is currently no fear of him losing his place in India’s ODI team.
Speaking to reporters after a high-level meeting at the BCCI headquarters at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday evening to review the Indian team’s disappointing performances over the past few months, Saikia said, “Rohit is playing well in all the matches. In the last ODI he played, he scored 138 runs. What more do you want from him? I don’t understand why there is so much speculation about him. I don’t want to give any encouragement to such speculation.”
Ajit Agarkar Joined the Meeting Virtually
Amid reports that chief selector Ajit Agarkar could not attend the important meeting personally due to personal reasons but joined it virtually, it was learnt that head coach Gautam Gambhir, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer and BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) chief VVS Laxman, based in Bengaluru, were present at the BCCI headquarters.
No Selection Meeting, Says Saikia
Saikia also told reporters, “We did not have any kind of selection meeting today (Thursday). This was a routine meeting. It was the same type of meeting that we hold every three months. The meeting was held with the head coach of the Indian team, the COE chief, the T20 team captain and the Test and ODI captain.
“We discussed the Indian team’s recent performances in Ireland and England. We also discussed what we should do over the next year. We already have a roadmap in place, and the players will also undergo some practice so that they can perform well in the 2027 World Cup.”
