Vande Mataram Will Play From the Red Fort for the First Time on India’s 80th Independence Day, With Gen Z Front and Centre
Vande Mataram will be sung from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15 a first. It comes as young Indians get pushed to the centre of this year’s ceremony, months after student-led protests over the NEET paper leak put Gen Z’s anger on national display.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said Monday that 2026 marks 150 years since Vande Mataram was written, the song that helped rally Indians during the freedom struggle. That anniversary is why it’s being sung now.
The song will play as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives at the Red Fort, just before he unfurls the flag and gives his Independence Day address.
Everything ties back to “Yuva Shakti”
This year’s theme is “Yuva Shakti” youth power linked to the government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 goal.
For the 150-year mark, around 2,500 NCC cadets and MY Bharat volunteers will gather on Gyanpath, opposite the Red Fort, and spell out “Vande Mataram” with their bodies. An Air Force Mi-17 will fly over them trailing a commemorative banner and dropping flower petals.
Nineteen Indian medal winners from the 2026 International Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics Olympiads will sit on the Red Fort ramparts this year, rather than just getting a mention from the podium.
Around 5,000 special guests are invited young innovators, entrepreneurs, startup founders, skilled tradespeople, farmers, artisans, sanitation workers, and people who’ve benefited from government schemes. More than 1,500 of them, representing states and union territories, will arrive in traditional dress.
No more VIP-named enclosures
The seating enclosures at the Red Fort are being renamed after major Indian lakes instead of VIPs, continuing the river-theme naming from this year’s Republic Day. It’s a nudge toward water conservation.
About 600 winners of Defence Ministry and MyGov quizzes will also attend. Those contests touched on AI, Viksit Bharat, India’s space and tech achievements, nuclear technology, and the freedom movement.
Metro opens at 4 am
Twenty-five cloakrooms across six locations, 200 volunteers, 20 wheelchairs the usual scaffolding for a crowd this size.
Delhi Metro starts at 4 am on August 15, and invitees ride free with the QR codes on their e-invitations. Drainage around the Red Fort is being cleared in case of rain, and once the ceremony ends, NCC cadets and MY Bharat volunteers will do the cleanup.
Separately, military and security bands are playing at 343 locations across the country between August 8 and 15 — Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, NCC, and several central armed police forces among them.
