Sergio Gor In Kashmir Today: First US Envoy Visit Since Article 370 Abrogation

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor is set to visit Kashmir on Wednesday, marking the first trip by a US envoy to the Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370 and in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, which had triggered Operation Sindoor. However, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is scheduled to meet Gor, played down the significance of the visit, asserting that “Washington won’t solve Kashmir’s problems.”

Gor, who will also call on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, is expected to travel onward to Ladakh on Thursday. The high-profile visit carries added weight coming seven years after the Centre revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and split the region into two Union Territories.

Speculation is rife that Gor, seen as close to US President Donald Trump, could also interact with trade body representatives and members of civil society during his stay in Srinagar, although there has been no official confirmation of any such engagements so far.

The visit unfolds against the backdrop of a deepening India-US strategic partnership and follows recent exchanges between Gor and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on counter-terrorism cooperation. On multiple counts, the trip marks a historic moment in India-US engagement over Kashmir.

Omar Abdullah To Discuss J&K Situation, Rules Out Complaints

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar on Wednesday while reviewing developmental works in the city, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed he would meet the visiting envoy and discuss the situation in the Union Territory, but made clear he would not use the meeting to air grievances. He said that issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir have to be resolved by the Centre and not by Washington, ruling out raising any grievances with the US Ambassador during their scheduled meeting.

Abdullah noted that it had been a long time since a US ambassador visited Jammu and Kashmir, and personally, a long time since he had met any American envoy. “Let him come; we will sit and talk,” he told reporters. He added that he would prefer to listen more to the ambassador, noting that Gor was also coming to listen. Abdullah maintained that the issues facing Jammu and Kashmir have no direct bearing on the US, since their resolution would come from the central government and not from Washington.

Responding separately to questions on corruption allegations linked to appointments made by the BJP, Abdullah said the police, crime branch, and anti-corruption bureau do not fall under his control, and that any genuine case of corruption should be investigated, registered, and acted upon.
