On Saturday, August 1, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram, Vizianagaram district. This is Andhra Pradesh’s first new international airport after the split in 2014.
The airport, which was constructed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited in a public-private partnership at a cost of more than ₹5,640 crore, is intended to accommodate six million passengers annually in its initial phase. In addition to walking through the terminal and cutting the ribbon, PM Modi spoke at a public gathering.
He referred to the airport as a runway for the development of north Andhra and pointed out that, unlike other airports in India, this one bears the name of a tribal freedom fighter. In addition, ₹17,900 crore worth of infrastructure, including highways and a semiconductor facility in Visakhapatnam, received foundation stones. N. Chandrababu Naidu, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, set two deadlines: the completion of Polavaram in 2027 and the first phase of Amaravati by 2028.
The Rs 460 crore ASIP Semiconductor Project in Visakhapatnam, which is being constructed by ASIP Technologies Pvt Ltd in collaboration with APACT, Republic of Korea, was inaugurated by PM Modi.
According to a PIB press release, “it is Andhra Pradesh’s first semiconductor manufacturing facility approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, which will manufacture around 96 million semiconductor chips annually and foster a robust ancillary ecosystem to support semiconductor manufacturing.”
PM Modi also laid down the groundwork for the Kurnool-IV Renewable Energy Zone (REZ)-Phase-I (4.5 GW) Transmission System, which POWERGRID is implementing through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) at a cost of roughly Rs 5,550 crore.
In addition to the transmission scheme for the Solar Energy Zone in Ananthapuram (2,500 MW) and Kurnool (1,000 MW), which was implemented by POWERGRID at a cost of more than Rs 820 crore, he also inaugurated the transmission system for the Kurnool Wind Energy Zone and Solar Energy Zone (Andhra Pradesh) – Part A & Part B, which was implemented at a cost of about Rs 3,550 crore.
PM Modi made a commitment to the country by laying the groundwork for National Highway (NH) projects valued at more than Rs 1,880 crore.
Additionally, PM Modi lay the foundation stone for a high-level bridge on the Penchalakona–Yerpedu segment of NH-565 at Lingasamudram.
